FUNNY CIDE

Funny Cide surprise winner of the 129th Kentucky Derby
and the 128th Preakness Stakes. A New York Bred gelding will now
make a run for the triple crown, June 7th at Belmont Park.
What a story this has been, owned by Sackatoga Stable, a small
operation of friends from upstate New York.. The friends purchased
the horse in a interesting way. Sackatoga's trainer Barclay Tagg had
spotted Funny Cide at a sale and recommended to the group that they
purchase the horse. The group did not have the money at the time. In
the mean time, one of Sackatoga's horses was claimed giving the friends
the capital to purchase Funny Cide. Since Funny Cide ran in the Wood
Memorial owners Sackatoga Stable, trainer Barclay Tagg and jockey Jose
Santos have been living a dream and a nightmare.
After Funny Cide's upset victory of Empire Maker in the Kentucky
Derby a "story" broke in the Miami Herald alleging that jockey Jose Santos
was carrying a machine (electronic device to speed up the horse) in his
whip hand. After an investigation Jose Santos was cleared of
ALL allegations.
The ultimate vindication was to follow with the running of
the 128th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. Funny Cide not only won the
Preakness by some 9 lengths but proved he is "the little red machine".
Now the stage is set for "the little red machine" to
capture his one chance at the triple crown. Win or lose Funny Cide
has displayed what makes horse racing so exciting for his connections and
America.
Well the triple crown was not to be for Funny
Cide, it might have been the track, the fast work before the Belmont or
maybe Empire Maker was just the better horse that day. But as
Funny Cide was leaving the track, as the carnations were being thrown
over Empire Maker, I could see the gelding look him in the eye as to say
"See you in Saratoga"
Funny Cide might have had a fleeting
glance of Empire Maker has his van left Saratoga heading for Monmouth
Park and the Haskel Invitational. Funny Cide was to run a lack
luster 3rd down at the Jersey shore.
