Barrel racing is an exciting action packed experience that you are not likely to forget. If you have been a spectator but would like to try your hand at barrel racing there are some things that you should know before beginning, and some things to consider when you begin to train your horse for competition.
The first thing to consider is the horse. You should be very picky when buying a horse for barrel racing. A quarterhorse is best. You should try and find a horse that is equal in talent to you. If you have an experienced barrel racing horse and you are an amateur, you are likely to be scared away from the sport. You will want a horse that will learn the sport with you.
When teaching the horse that you have chosen you should go slow! Begin by getting to know the horse and slowly walking him around the course. Then move it up to a trot, and finally to the full run. It will take a long time to get it exactly right. Don't try and rush yourself or the horse.
Remember the importance of rest. Your horse will need rest just like you do. Take the time, after exercising to rub him/her down and cool off. A good massage will work wonders on your horse.
These are some general tips from the pros:
Keep your eyes on the next barrel, if one falls, and you panic, your horse will as well. Try and always focus forward.
When turning , your horse will lean, however you should stay straight up in the saddle. This will prevent your horse from loosing balance and wasting time.
Wrap rubber bands around your boots to keep them from slipping in the stirrups.
Keep your head up and your feet in. Don't look at the barrels, and tuck your feet into the horse.
