Greyhound Racing: Treatment of Dogs That Race

The treatment and living conditions of greyhounds, as to whether or not it is abusive, has long been an issue of debate. The greyhounds are raced, usually for money in a betting situation, all over the United States and also in some European counties as well as South American Countries. In situations where the dogs are not raced for money, the treatment of the animals seems to be better since the are kept primarily as pets, rather than a source of income to the owner.

A typical greyhound kennel consists of rows of cages, stacked one atop the other. The females are usually kept on the top kennels, while the males are kept on the lower ones. The small kennels are just big enough for the dogs to turn around in and stand up. Most likely so that the least amount of energy is used while in the cage. The dogs typically never leave the cage except to race.

The medical care of the dogs is kept at a minimal level, since they are seen by the owners as short-term investments. The dogs are usually given medical treatment only when their injuries could prevent them from racing. It is not uncommon for owners to skip vaccinations, and dental care for the greyhounds, which leads to diseases. It has been reported that the condition of the greyhounds teeth are often very bad probably from chewing on the cages, or from a diet consisting mostly of raw meat. When the dogs become to old to race, or physically unable to race, they are generally killed so that they owner will not have to bear the expense of keeping the animal or adopting the dog to a loving home.

There are several organizations that specialize in adoption of these ex-racing greyhounds to find them homes as pets. These organizations often protest the poor treatment of the animals, and very often promote a picture of the worst treatment of the animals. It should be noted that the poor treatment of these racing dogs is not truth among every kennel. Some kennels do treat the greyhounds very well and others do not; however, it is common for these animals to be mistreated in some way.
