Outdated Racing Helmets: What is the Risk?

A helmet is the most important piece of equipment that you will put on no matter what kind of racing that you are doing. It is absolutely essential that you wear a helmet that is up to date and approved for the kind of racing that you are doing. I personally would not wear anything except the Snell SA 2000. Why? It is simple. This helmet is approved for use in auto races. Other helmets that were not approved, which this is the only one, did not pass the test that is given to ensure safety when used in motor vehicle races. When I say they did not pass, this means, they failed. They busted. If your head was inside, it would not be good news for your family. Consider these safety ratings when shopping for your helmet.

The DOT rating, stands for Department of Transportation, and these helmets are designed and tested for use on the public roads, in general conditions. These are not intended to be used when racing. If you are using the helmets when carting, you should look for a helmet that has a Snell K98 rating. These helmets are not intended for use in any event, racing or non, except carting. The Snell M2000 is approved for motorcycle and motor vehicle usage, although they have not been approved for racing situation. Some racing events will require this type of helmet as a minimum, keep in mind, it failed at least part of the test that could save your life in the event of a crash during a race. Finally, the Snell SA2000, has been tested and approved for "special applications", meaning that they are safe for use in competition racing and are safer than all the other helmets according to the safety reports. These helmets will protect you from fire, projectiles, fluids such as gasoline, and the face mask will stay closed to protect you in the event of a roll over. You should be able to see why the Snell SA2000 is the best of the best, and will ultimately provide you with the best protection that you can get in the event of a crash.
