There are several different snowmobile racing associations, such as the World Snowmobile Association (WSA, based in Minnesota), the Washington State Snowmobile Association (WSSA), and the Northeast Snowmobile Association (NSA). Snowmobile racing is gaining popularity throughout the United States. A snowmobile meant for racing alone can be purchased if you are interested in racing, or there are different styles of snowmobiles available for other activities.
Snowmobiles can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $11,000. When purchasing a snowmobile, be sure to ask the dealer a lot of questions about the kind of snowmobile you are looking for, including what kind of modifications can be made to the snowmobile if you are interested in modifying the vehicle for racing purposes.
Contacting the snowmobile racing association in your area is a great way to get started in the snowmobile racing world, either as a fan or as a racer. For instance, the World Snowmobile Association sponsors many snowmobile racing events, such as the U.S. Air Force Eastern National (taking place in Minnesota in 2006), the Oneida Bingo and Casino Ultimate Lambeau Leap (taking place in Wisconsin in 2006), and the Polaris Canterbury Snocross (also taking place in Minnesota in 2006).
Snowmobile racers can be of various ages, starting as young as 10 years old. During a competition, racers register to compete in certain age groups and also in certain groups for the kind of engine the snowmobile has. There are other very important rules that need to be followed during a race, such as the importance of reporting injuries to race officials, following certain flag signals during a race, or being prohibited from using profanity at any person on the side of the track.
Most important, however, is safety. Be certain to always wear your safety gear, and keep your vehicle maintained and in good condition at all times to prevent any problems or possible injury! Best of all, have a great time!
