Seabiscuit sure didn't look like much. With his smallish stature, knobby knees, he looked more like a lead pony than a thoroughbred ready to race. But looks aren't everything; his greatest quality, you couldn't see, his heart. Seabiscuit rose to prominence in the 1930's with three unlikely characters, owner Charles Howard, an automobile dealer who once declared that "the day of the horse is past"; trainer Tom Smith, a man who had cultivated an almost mystical communication with horses; and jockey Red Pollard, who was down on his luck when he charmed a then-surly horse with his calm demeanor and a sugar cube. One of Seabiscuits great accomplishment's, was in a 1938 Match race vs. War Admiral. Out racing War Admiral into the first turn. Seabiscuit then settled in and awaited his que to go from jockey George Wolf. Entering the far turn "The Ice man" said go with "the biscuit" the question that had been asked for years was about to be answered. Seabiscuit by a half-length. Has great as Seabiscuit was on the track his greatest accomplishments did not come on the track. Seabiscuit had a way of healing hearts and creating emotion. A hardened racetrack trainer Tom Smith was brought to tears as his hero, legendary trainer James Fitzsimmons, asked to hold Seabiscuit's bridle while the horse was saddled; critically injured Red Pollard, whose chest was crushed in a racing accident a few weeks before, listening to Seabiscuit race from his hospital bed, cheering "Get going, Biscuit! Get 'em, you old devil!"; Seabiscuit was both the diversion and the love owner Charles Howard needed in his life after the death of his son. For all America Seabiscuit was the "comeback story" and the under-dog that so closely paralleled everyone's life post depression.
